15 Things People Love to Say to Authors

In no particular order (other than the first one),  here is a list of 15 things people love to say to authors.

1. So you like . . . write books? Have you published any or do you just . . . write?
2. I've never met a real author before. I'm going to tell my kids I met you when I get home. 
3. Do you know somebody named (insert any name here)? We went to school together and I think they wrote a book a few years ago called uh . . . I can't think of the name of it right now but you should look him/her up.
4. Where can I get your book? Like at a store or something? REALLY???
5. So do you do book signings?
6. I love to read; you should bring me some of your books and let me read them and I'll tell you what I think.
7. I started writing a book one time. I've got about three chapters. I should let you read it. 
8. I want to write a book. You can help me! 
9. You should write my life story! It is guaranteed to be a best seller!
10. I'm working on a poetry book.
11. How much money do you make? Do you have a real job?
12. You should still send your book to Oprah - I think she still has a book club thing.
13. What do you write? Oh I don't read that.
14. My wife/mom/sister/cousin reads all the time. I'm going to tell her to get your book.
15. What was your name again?

Oh, if I only had a dollar for all the times I've heard these I'd definitely be in another tax bracket!  If you are a reader . . . yeah - we get this all the time. We'd love it if you went one extra step and followed up with a purchase! :-)  Here's a chance for you to do that now - just click the image on the left and go book shopping. How Great Books Get Started

You ever have a dream that's too real to be crazy but too crazy to be real?

It clearly reveals something so dreadful that you hope it was just an awful dream?

You wake up hot and near a sweat if not sweating already then stare up at the ceiling and think about the details of the movie you just saw playing in your head.

There's nothing symbolic, nothing strange, nothing to figure out  - just a good ol' straight forward revelation.

It's too clear to simply dismiss or chalk it up to a late night donut covered in pink icing and sprinkles.

So you silently pray, "Okay God - what's the deal with that? Are you serious?"

But you feel like He just showed you what the deal was, so there's no real reason to ask for more clarity.

Put simply, it just is what it is . . .  even though you don't want it to be.

So you grab a journal and a pen to jot down the details before you forget them, and while you're writing, you think to yourself, "hey . . . this would make a great book."

Yeah . . . I just woke up from one of those.  

The wheels are turning. Both in my reality and in my imagination.  

That's how great books get started.
