You Never Forget Your First . . .

I try not to toot my own horn too much, but at the same time, let people know what it is I do . . . which is write books. I'm an author . . .  with 14 published titles to date. Being an author, I always have to be on my marketing game, looking for and taking advantage of opportunities to increase my exposure and sales. That pretty much means tooting my own horn constantly but . . . (go back to the top of this post and start over).

Catch 22 right?  Even so, I strive hard not to bombard people with constant self-promotion, and balance my blog posts and social network statuses with other stuff too. Maybe a point to ponder, something to generate a laugh, a promotion of someone else's work, or a post of complete and utter silliness.  For an example - I posted yesterday:

If my name was Gretel, that witch would have been homeless (thoughts of a sugar addict).

One of the responses I got was:

[She'd be] sitting in the wood on a cardboard box holding fast to her last pack of Reese's Pieces.

That cracked me up for about an hour!

But back to my point . . . what I found is - when I take a break from saying "look at me and buy my stuff" and then return to it - someone always pops up and asks me something like:
  • Are you an author?
  • When does your first book come out
  • Is this your first book?
  • I just bought your first book. When does the next one come out?
  • I didn't know you had that many books out! I thought (book number x) was your only one!
Which always leads me back to . . . okay start reading this post from the top again!

Yesterday via Facebook, someone posted on my wall (paraphrased edition):

I saw your first book for sale in Citi Trends yesterday. I would have bought it but I already have your first book.

My response was:
Citi Trends??? (a fashion store for the younger generation)
Which book? (since I know my "first" book is currently out of print and pending its upcoming e-release).

Her response:
Your first one. It was $3.99

Hmmm . . . Now my first book - Promise You Won't Tell Nobody - is retail priced at $11.95 - not to say that a retailer didn't find a case of them somewhere and mark them all down. But since that title was self published, there's no way they could be at a store like Citi Trends and I don't know about it.  This led me to believe that she was referencing one of my six traditionally published mass market titles, which are priced at $6.99 retail, and could very well be discounted at $3.99. That's what makes sense to me . . . except by the time my first mass market title came along - I was already published three times.

So what "first book" was she talking about?? I have no idea because she didn't respond when I asked for more information.

So today's lesson is - it doesn't matter how many books you publish, readers always think that the first one they purchase was your first. I'm not complaining though. First, last, whatever. I appreciate anyone who purchases my work and they are welcomed to chronicle them in the order of their choosing.

And I guess I will be stopping by the two Citi Trends in my area to see which one of my first books they are selling . . . I am soooo excited about that! :-)

My Super Tiny Teeny-Weeny Ex - 12

Sydney came home from work, took a shower and came to bed ready to have sex as usual. It was hard for me to open my legs up to him knowing that he’d been lying to me all this time, but I made myself do it, like I had done for the past six months since I’d found out about how much money he was hiding. Even when I hinted around for things that we needed in the house or how a bill was about to go unpaid and said things like “We’re going to have to come up with the money some how,” he never gave any indication that he had it in the bank. Nor did he produce any cash.

Not wanting him in my face, I let him in from behind and falsified my moaning and groaning, encouraging Sydney to finish his poking faster. When he was done, he collapsed and pulled me to him. “I’ll be ready for round two in about an hour,” he chuckled.

I lay there silently in random thought about how challenging marriage really was. When I heard Sydney begin to snore softly, I scooted forward out of the spoon.

“Where you going?” he mumbled putting forth a little effort to keep me in place.

“I need some water,” I lied. I wasn’t thirsty; I just couldn’t lay there one more second in the arms of a man who refused exert any more effort, no matter how slight, to better his own life, and then be so selfish on top of that. It was a turn off, no matter how good the sex could be.

“Bring me something to drink when you come back,” he mumbled. “Please.”

“Okay.”

With no specific purpose other than to get out of Sydney’s presence, I walked to the kitchen and leaned against the counter, folding my arms across my chest. There was complete silence other than the ticking of a wall clock. The sound drew my eyes to it and reminded me that there were only three sleeping hours left before I would have to get up, get the kids ready and go to work. Sydney was working from four to midnight, so it only seemed logically right that he would get Casey off to school, and keep Carlos, during the day time, but he still refused forcing me to pay the extra daycare money anyway.

I was so disgusted with my lying lazy husband.

Which made me think about Quinton Larowe.

Relationship Magic - Part One

A Mini Excerpt from the novel Spoonin'

“Show me that rock girl,” Sydney grinned, then winked seductively. With a giggle I placed my hand into his, he kissed the backside then centered it on his crotch and I began fondling.

““Mmm,” he moaned. “Yeah, that’s it. Work that thing, baby.”

We’d played ‘show me the rock’ eight other times since he’d dressed my finger with his commitment. I’d show him the rock on my finger and he would show me the one in his pants. Once I got him to full attention, we would find somewhere to pull over and get our freak on. Didn’t matter where; sometimes it was right on the side of the road, as long as one of us kept our eyes open just in case a police cruiser rolled by. Other than that, every other driver on the highway was too busy trying to get to where they were going to pay much attention to us.

The first time we played, we made sure Casey was asleep then turned on a narrow little dirt road between some corn stalks, which was the perfect place for me to sit on the hood of the car, open my legs and show him how much I was looking forward to being his wife. For this round, I got on my knees turned towards the driver’s seat while he stood in the passenger door behind me, gripped my hips and laid his pipe. Woooo! I loved this game! It only took a couple of minutes per session but the risquéness made is so enjoyable. It was gonna be one of the things we did to keep our sex life hot and spicy once we tied the knot.

Turning Your Storm into a Story

He instructed me to lie down and I did. He began to touch me and I wasn’t sure if this was a part of the game anymore. He told me to open my legs and I did; he got on top of me and then began forcing himself into me. No screams, no tears because I didn’t understand what was going on. At some point I asked him to stop because I got very scared. Once he did, I went into the bathroom, not realizing any damage had been done. I sat down on the toilet and all I could see was blood.

Have You Had Your Brown Sugar Today? - K Matthews

Bubblin' Brown SugarTo experience full reading pleasure - click the play button below

Here's an excerpt from Lisa's Dress - my own contribution to the anthology Bubblin' Brown Sugar

It sounds stupid, but I stood in my bedroom closet in complete darkness for ten minutes, then I eased to the floor like a helium balloon with a tiny pin prick allowing air to slowly escape, folded my arms across my knees and dropped my head. In the closet, no one, not even I, could see my tears.
I'd actually come in the closet to pick a suit to wear to church, trying to force myself to go. It had been weeks since my last appearance, and the more I stayed away, the more various people reached out to me to make sure I was alright. I was too ashamed to tell them the truth, to admit I'd messed up, to ask for help. So to prove to everyone that they were worried about me for nothing, I was going to force myself to enter the house of the Lord, clap my hands when the choir sang, shout out a few amens when the pastor preached, and just tell everyone that I'd simply been working overtime. But the first thing my eyes fell on when I walked in the closet today was Lisa's wedding dress. It was hanging where it had always hung since we married just under five years ago. Zipped in a clear garment bag, mid-way the rack, it had served as a separator between her clothes and mine. I'd been in this same closet a thousand other times since our break-up, and barely even saw the dress, but today the shimmering white fabric embellished with Svorkian crystals demanded my attention and held me captive.
Lost in a sea of thought, I stood motionless, except my eyes which randomly scanned the garment until I flicked the light off. I remembered how Lisa took my pure breath away that day, our wedding day, gliding towards me like the angel she was. And still is. And just like now, it had brought tears to my eyes, overwhelmed that God would bestow upon me such favor to bless me with a woman like Lisa. No, not a woman like Lisa, but with Lisa. No one but the two of us knew at the time, but my seed was hidden deep within her belly, and that, mixed with her radiant beauty, forced me to take my handkerchief from my pocket to absorb the slow trickle of moisture that had expressed to our audience the emotion I felt that day. She was my queen and I vowed to honor and treat her as such. It's funny how tears can express both unspeakable joy and unspeakable pain.
My own sniff broke the silence for just a fraction of a second, and even though I was hidden from the world, I refused to bawl, although it's exactly what I felt like doing. Instead, I shifted to lie on my back, staring up towards a ceiling I couldn't see, looking for what I'd been frantic to find for three years now - a ray of light.

Can Great Sex Sustain a Marriage?

There's a song I remember hearing as a child in the early to mid seventies - Everybody Plays the Fool, as sung by the Main Ingredient. Check them out on Soul Train...

Everybody plays a fool sometimes
No exception to the rule...
Love is deeper than any ocean and clouds your mind with emotion

This is how Kareese finds herself after marrying Sydney Christopher - foolishly in love, and willing to fight the world for her marriage, that's only good when she and Sydney are spoonin.'

Reviews for Spoonin'

"Kimberly Matthews did a great job creating this novel. It grabbed and held my attention throughout the entire book. She definitely did an excellent job evoking emotion. I was constantly taken on an emotional rollercoaster with the main characters Karesse and Sydney. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone." - Novella on Amazon.com

"Kim, i just started  reading this book this evening, and I tell you I don't want to put it down. Girl the book is good!!" - Ava Hamlett

"Just finished reading "Spoonin" by Kimberly Matthews-Hooker. It is a very good read.  It is definitely a page turner with the drama, love, and intimacy.  You won't be able to put it down." - Reading Fanatic on Amazon.com

"Read the entire book in one day because it was so GOOD, couldn't put it down!!!" - Nidra Webster

Become an Amazon Best Seller!

A couple of summers ago my novel The Perfect Shoe, hit the Amazon Best Seller's List for African American Romance. You can imagine my excitement as I watched my ranking move hour-by-hour closer to the number one slot, then finally seized it at around 12 am.

It was a hard day's work, but it gave me a title that can't be taken away - I'm a best selling author. Once you become an Amazon bestselling author you can forevermore be referred to as a “bestselling author.”

So how can you do it?  Well first of all, Amazon updates their numbers every hour. This means we must sell as many books as we can in the shortest amount of time. Nobody knows how many copies it takes to hit the bestseller mark because Amazon has its own proprietary algorithm, but if you have joint venture partners, with a bit of planning, you can engineer a mass email campaign with incentive bonuses to buy your book from Amazon on a certain day. Your book becomes a bestseller “by rate” rather than numbers of copies sold. Your book becomes an Amazon bestseller in one of your categories using this method.

Launch an Email Campaign - use your mailing lists to launch a book release campaign, asking your contacts to purchase your book on a specific day and include an incentive for purchases.. You may want to send a pre-launch message, to help your supporters understand what you are trying to accomplish and give them time, if they need to fit the price of your book into their spending plan.

Use Social Networking - There are great tools out there that will allow you to pre-plan your posts, and can be set up to routinely post to your profile as a reminder to purchase on a specific day. These tools will allow you to post to multiple social networking sites at once.  No need to log into various places, and your message is consistent.

Create a Sense of Urgency - Be clear in communicating that you would like your supporters to purchase your book on a specific day.  It's discouraging to try to reach this goal to have people to say "Okay, I will get it next week."

Communicate your goal - Let your supporters know exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Tell them you are striving to be an best seller. They will be more likely to help you than if you just say, "can you buy my book today."

Don't forget to reach out to people personally. Scroll through your phone and look at all of those numbers you've collected. Most of them already know that you're an author, but it's likely that there are some who have never purchased your work.  But how many of them will support you if you clearly communicate your goal? You'd be surprised. Keep in mind that the worse thing someone can say to you is "no."

Writers: Do You Have a Daily Rate?

Writing for a living can have it's financial challenges. While you're between royalty checks, signing events, or other sources of writing income, the "ends" that are supposed to meet sometimes act like they are not interested in knowing each other at all. To compensate lulls between checks, you may want to consider taking on a freelancing projects. If you do, be proactive about your writing income by determining your daily rate.

Importance of a Daily Rate
Having a daily rate is vital when you’re trying to decide whether or not to accept a job or if you’re asked for a ball park figure on rates.

  • Decide how much you have to make this year and break it down.
  • Realize how much time it will take to do the job.
  • Ask your client what their budget is.
  • Offer to do one or two small tasks cheaply, then re-negotiate.

Now that you know why you should care about your daily rate, here’s how to do it. Say your goal is to earn $100,000 from freelance writing this year.

There are 365 days in the year, but 104 of those days are weekends. There are also roughly 10 holidays a year where it’s virtually impossible to get much work done — Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, etc. Family members will likely expect you to shut off your computer and pay attention to them on these occasions.

Let’s hope you’re not working weekends or major holidays, and that you also plan to take at least two weeks off a year (an important time to regroup). That leaves around 240 real, viable work days in the year.

Divide $100,000 by 240 and you get roughly $417 a day. That’s your daily rate. Want to earn $50,000 a year? That’s around $209 per working day.

Break out those calculators!

Your Body's Here with Me...

I wanted Quinton bad and had he been anywhere near the Raleigh/Durham area I would have been somewhere finding out if he was a man of his word. I was so hot and horny when I got off work, I rushed to Wal-Mart and picked up some chicken tenders and potato salad so the boys could feed themselves, took a quick shower and just lay spread eagle on the bed waiting for Sydney to come home from where ever he was and work me over. I made sure I was butt naked, turned over and tooted up.

Sydney was pleasantly surprised judging from the moan that immediately escaped his lips when he came into the bedroom well after nine o’clock, although he now worked strictly day hours.

“Come get some of this,”I cooed, bouncing my butt up and down.

“What done got into you,” Sydney asked stripping off his clothes.

“I want some of what you got.”

“Well let me give you some of what you want then.”

Sydney wasted no time jumping on the bed and pulling up behind me. With one hand he grabbed firmly at my hinged waist while the other hand guided his manhood to my honey pot. He worked his way inside and started a smooth even rhythm.

“Yeah, baby. Like that.” I coached, imagining it was Quinton. “Lay that pipe.”

“Mmph!” Sydney grunted. “You like that.”

“I love it baby. Put it on me,” I purred, winding my hips back to meet his thrusts.

Sydney sped his stroke up, slamming himself against me while I filled his ears with every nasty thing I could think of to heighten the experience.

“Yeah, I like that!” he huffed. “Talk dirty baby; you gonna make me unload this gun!”

“Not yet,” I panted. I drew away from him long enough to turn over on my back. Sydney dove between my legs slurping and working his tongue like a greedy mad man. He was on his A game, and my thoughts and fantasies of Quinton intensified my sensitivity and reaction. I held Sydney firmly in place, and at the same time, I grinded, bucked and jerked into a full, no holds barred orgasm, biting my bottom lip to keep from crying out Quinton’s name. Heaving and panting for every breath as if it were my last and unable to take another circling of his tongue, I grabbed desperately for Sydney to come up for air and reenter my body. He complied, locking my legs around his arms and giving me every inch of what I’d asked for.

“Damn Kareese!” he exclaimed in pleasure, sliding back into my walls. “Unngghh,” he grunted over and over with every plunge, building momentum. “You gone make me….” Before he could squeeze out his last high octave word, he pushed forward a final time releasing inside me with a groan. He was frozen in place for a solid six seconds before he began to relax in a slow collapse, completely out of breath.

It was undoubtedly the best sex we’d had in a long time.
