"Please, please, PLEASE!  Please let me be your slave! I don't want to be free! I want to serve you, work for you, have you riding my back, and will even take your abuse for more years than I can count!  PLEASE!  I'm begging you! Here is all my information, my social security number, my home address, my bank account number and my momma's name.  I will do anything I need to do just to be your slave; I promise! "

Can you imagine yourself doing that? Literally begging someone to rule and control your life.

Doesn't that sound crazy? Of course it does! Do you know that every time you fill out a credit card application, or charge something to your credit card (with the intentions of not paying it off right away) that is what you are saying? You are asking and agreeing to be someone's slave.

I don't like this picture of Lavar Burton depicted as a slave. Really, it's hard for me to look at any slave images, but the harsh reality was, this is what I looked like financially. When I came to this realization, that I had willingly asked to be a slave, (and not just to one "master" but to a few) I had to bring everything to a complete halt and reassess my thinking. Here is the crazy part - because I have a good credit score, I was PROUD of my ability to ask and be accepted as a new slave! Completely ecstatic to be branded, proudly opening my wallet in front of my friends, cashiers, waiters - whomever to show off my branding of who actually owned me.  Oh my goodness!  What in the world was I thinking? I had lost my daggone mind! I mean really - who in the world wants to be a slave? Only those who are ignorant to how freeing freedom is.

I had to make a decision to stop being ignorant, and stop begging folks to let me be a slave. I had to take responsibility of my financial choices. I had to take a hard look of how I was spending my money. And yes - I had to repent -Lord, forgive me for my financial stupidity!

So - is this you? Are you a slave and proud of it?  I challenge you to take control.  YOU take the shackles off - your masters are NOT going to do it, but YOU can. Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Several years ago I remember reading T.D. Jakes' The Great Investment, and Glenda Bridforth's  "Girl, Get Your Money Straight."  It was what I needed at the time to . . . well, get my money straight.  I had a job that paid well (in exchange for a ton of hours that took away from my family), and like any woman, I appreciated new snazzy shoes and a nice outfit, but I was hardly a shop-a-holic. None-the-less, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't rise above living from pay check to pay check. Something had to change.

As I read these two books, I became empowered to be a big girl and face my financial challenges. Actually, being a big girl was not enough - I had to be a grown woman. I had to look at how and where I spent every dime, create some strategies for reducing my debt, and build a solid savings plan. It took focus, discipline and sacrifice, but I was so proud of myself when I could pull up my bank account without biting my nails hoping that a check I'd written didn't make it to the bank before my paycheck. I no longer had to shy away in embarrassment from someone who said "how's your credit?" And I can still remember the day I was able to truly confess that I owed nothing to any man, a confession our church congregation stated every Sunday, in faith.

Since that time, I've maintained my great credit rating but have only done an "okay" job with managing my finances.  But I plan to be a millionaire. Just doing "okay" is not going to get me there. If it's a true goal, it will take constant focus and strategy. Which is why I'm so excited about www.mint.com, a financial website that tracks every single account I have (even PayPal), categorizes my spending, helps me to set realistic and financial goals and keeps me on focus. It shows with a click my current net worth, debt to income, available cash, and will even track my tax related expeditures.
