Jim Edwards here with your "Tip of the Week!" This week we answer the question:
How do I know my ebook will sell?
Nobody wants to waste time, least of all ebook authors. It takes effort and time to turn out a quality ebook - time you can't get back if you do down the wrong trail.
So, how do you know if your ebook will sell or not BEFORE you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard)? How can you
know if people will buy what you're about to write?
Short answer: "Pile on the WHY!"
By "pile on the why" I mean think about WHY someone would buy ANY ebook - BEFORE you write one yourself.
In other words, instead of doing what most people do, which is to decide on an ebook topic and then try to figure out if someone will buy it, you figure out what motivates them to buy in the first place, and THEN make your ebook topic satisfy that inner drive.
People buy an ebook because it satisfies or releases some stress in their life. Something is wrong and they want to fix it.
Examples:
~ They're bored.
They buy a book for mental escape. (By the way, this is what drives almost all *fiction* book sales.)
~ They need money.
They buy an ebook that teaches money-making strategies they believe will help them take a great vacation, look cool to their co-workers, and tell the boss to kiss their A** as they drive off in a new car.
~ They're lonely.
They buy an ebook on how to meet other people, have a relationship, and get married.
~ They want to change their appea're fat.
They buy an ebook to help them be more attractive to members of the opposite sex!
Notice in the examples above that people don't buy because of what the book contains. They buy books because of the
RESULT they believe the book will give them. A worn out example of this is when sales trainers say people don't buy electric drills, they buy the holes the drills make.
I have a better example.
People buy books to lose weight so they can get their freak on and stop feeling like crap when they look in the mirror!
Yep! It's true!
They want to lose weight so they can get jiggy with that hottie in the office, or not embarrass themselves bysweating at the mall food court, or hate themselves because they can't even tie their shoes.
They don't buy because they "want to lose weight!" - there's always a REAL "inner" reason behind the "public" reason they give, even to themselves (Sorry if I offended anyone with this example, but it's the truth!)
So HOW do you "Pile on the WHY!"? Simple!
Start stacking up all the reasons why someone would buy ANY ebook and then tie those reasons to YOUR book topic
BEFORE you write it - then just create your ebook to meet all that criteria. As the weight of the "why" increases, your chances of making a sale increase massively!
So why do people buy? Quite a few reasons, actually.
~ To Have Fun
~ Gain Popularity
~ Find Relaxation
~ Make Money
~ Save Money
~ To Feel Love
~ Save Time
~ Escape / Avoid Effort
~ Fear (of something)
~ Greed (for something)
~ Security
You don't need to include them all, but combining several reasons works much better than depending on just one alone.
So if you sell an ebook on how to make money in real estate, include how to have fun while doing it and make time for your family.
If you sell an ebook on how to lose weight, include how to do it quickly without forcing people to sweat at the gym or
other "public" places.
You get the idea :-)
And, as you can see, making sure your ebook will sell actually starts LONG before you sit down to write it.
Knowing WHY people will buy and then playing to multiple reasons (motivation) massively increases your chances of
writing an ebook that will sell well, no matter which niche market you choose.
