My Super Tiny Teeny-Weeny Ex - 18

“So are you enjoying the married life,” Quinton asked as if he could see straight into my soul.

“It has its perks; it has its drawbacks.”

“If you could do it all over again, would you be married right now?”

That was a good question. Luckily, I had lifted my glass of Blackberry Sangria to my lips and had time to think while I swallowed. I wanted to be married, and I loved my husband but I wished things were different between us. Marriage wasn't exactly living up to what I imagined. I wasn't supposed to be carrying my husband; he was supposed to be carrying me. He wasn’t supposed to be hiding money. We weren’t supposed to have separate finances. I cleared my throat and pasted a smile on my face. “Yeah.” His eyes seemed to search my face for truth. I hoped my eyes gave off some kind of romantic and reminiscent twinkle although I didn’t half believe it myself.

“To the same man?” Quinton added.

Prepared this time, I answered more quickly and with lifted brows.

“Yes,” I dragged out.

“Liar,” he challenged after a few seconds of quiet studying. “I saw disappointment all in your eyes when I asked you that.”

Caught off guard and uncomfortable, I looked away for just a second.

“You're not happy and it shows. You can’t hide that behind a Halloween mask.”

“Yes I am.” Quinton only stared at me. “What’re you looking at?” I grimaced with irritation.

“Nothing,” he answered shaking his head. “If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands,” he snickered before taking a swig from his glass of wine.

“Hardy, har, har.” I said not cracking a smile. “I don’t appreciate you trying to stick your nose in my business. If I’m happy or not, that’s between me and my husband. You need to shut up talking about what you don’t know about.”

“You want to know how I know you’re unhappy?”

“You mean how you think you know?”

“Oh I know,” he nodded with assurance. “Because if you were happy, you wouldn’t be out having a quiet, romantic dinner with another man. It's alright to lie to me but don't lie to yourself.”
