Chapter 1: Common Who??
Ok who the heck said “Common sense was common? Oh it ain’t at all common! In fact when God was passing out common sense some of us were either running late that day , on CP time as usual or we were just a “no call no show”, which you know we do that well as well! I haven’t always had good sense either so let me not start this off by lying. I must admit I was a bit sheltered growing up. Being a young girl in the heart of the ghetto made it easy to get caught up into circumstances that could potentially ruin your life or worse—end your life. I have to thank God that didn’t fall victim to either. My mother kept me and my brother in church. My oldest brother has been on his own since the young tender age of
14, the mom we know isn’t he mom he knows. My heart goes out to him because he was exposed to a whole different world than the one we were exposed to. He had to learn how to survive on his own and damn near raise himself.

My mom hasn’t always been a saint and I think the mistakes she made when raising him caused a turnaround in her life. The result was “churching us to death”. Sometimes it felt like we were in the house of the Lord seven days a week. We were in church so much I felt like we were on vacation when we went home! I could have sworn Jesus himself issued us VIP passes to the sanctuary.
I didn’t have time to get caught up in the tough environment in which we resided so I learned some ‘life’
lessons the hard way. I was undoubtedly book smart but I didn’t posses not one ounce of street smarts what-so-ever. I was wet behind the ears and as nonchalant as a bed bug. My brothers were the street savvy ones. Common sense is a luxury and one I didn’t have. I’ve done some stupid things in my youth and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Wait, let’s backtrack because maybe I’m being a little too nice and bias toward myself so let’s rephrase…Ok…” I AM very guilty of doing some straight IGNORANT,borderline RETARDED things in my life that apparently didn’t require one train of thought”….whewww there! I said it!

I say that because I could NOT have been thinking when I made some of the decisions throughout my life, and
you know what they say “tell the truth, shame the devil”. The great thing about life is you live and you learn. Although I haven’t always thought with a ‘full deck of cards’, I wouldn’t trade those moments for the world
because those moments helped shaped me into the woman I am today. Things I have learned from the things I been through taught me some harsh lessons. Harsh but so necessary.
